Where to find your ITIN number
An ITIN is a nine-digit number that begins with 9 and is formatted like a Social Security number.IRS You can usually find yours in one of three places.
- The CP565 notice. This is the letter the IRS mailed when it assigned your ITIN.IRS Our CP565 guide shows what it says.
- A tax return you filed with your application. The IRS writes your assigned ITIN on the return and forwards it for processing.IRS Later returns carry the number where an SSN would go.
- Your application package. If a Certifying Acceptance Agent filed it, the agent receives copies of your ITIN notices, so ask them first.IRS
Third-party "ITIN lookup" websites are not the IRS. Share your details only with the IRS or with a firm you have hired.
What to do if you lost your ITIN
If you cannot find the CP565 notice, the IRS tells you to contact it.IRS The pages we checked point to its phone lines, not an online lookup.
- Outside the U.S.: 267-941-1000 (not toll-free).IRS
- Inside the U.S.: 800-829-1040, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time.IRS
Moved, or changed your name, since you got the number? Tell the IRS. For a name change, send a letter that explains it, with a copy of the marriage certificate, divorce decree or court record.IRS
How to tell if your ITIN has expired
The rule is simple. If your ITIN was not included on at least one U.S. federal tax return for three consecutive tax years, it expires on December 31 of the third year.IRS For example, an ITIN that was not on your 2023, 2024 or 2025 return expires on December 31, 2025.
| Your situation | Do you need to renew? |
|---|---|
| It expired and you are about to file a U.S. return with it | Yes Renew with Form W-7 and your return.IRS |
| It is only used on information returns that payers file (not on your own return) | Not yet Renew when you next file a return.IRS |
| It was assigned before 2013 and never renewed | Yes Submit a renewal with your U.S. return.IRS |
| It was on a U.S. return in the last three tax years | No It has not expired.IRS |
Filing a return with an expired ITIN can delay the return.IRS Our ITIN expiry guide and renewal service cover the next step.
If you now have an SSN
You cannot have both. Once you get an SSN, stop using your ITIN and tell the IRS, so it can combine your tax records under the SSN.IRS An ITIN does not give you work authorization or eligibility for Social Security benefits.IRS
